Two decades after Columbine and five years after Sandy Hook, educators and police still weren’t ready for Parkland.

Failures by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office and school district cost children their lives at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
A gunman with an AR-15 fired the bullets, but a series of blunders, bad policies, sketchy training and poor leadership helped him succeed. Information reported over 10 months by the South Florida Sun Sentinel reveals 58 minutes of chaos on campus marked by no one taking charge, deputies dawdling, false information spreading, communications paralyzed and children stranded with nowhere to hide.
To be sure, a number of teachers and police officers performed heroically. But an examination of the day’s events reveals that the Sheriff’s Office and school district were unprepared for the crisis.

BOTTOM LINE:
The response by the responding officers and school district personnel is disgraceful and allowed more people to be killed. There were at least 5 opportunities for school staff to initiate a school lock down before LEOs were called which could have prevented the carnage. LEO response was shameful. I wonder how those officers can live with themselves knowing they stood by allowing a mass killer have free reign over the school.
LESSONS LEARNED:
You and your kids need to be prepared to act on your own to save yourself. You cannot depend on anyone else to come and save you. There are just too many unknowns in these situations to make that a viable option: Who is coming? Is anyone coming? Do they even know this is happening? Where are they coming from? Are they really committed? What is their training? Do they have all of their equipment?
You and your kids have options, but it is something that you have to initiate. On the first sign of trouble, if you have the ability to get out, do so. Seek cover and call 911. If you can’t get out, get into someplace that you can be out of sight and barricade the entrance. Be ready to fight.
WPC has detailed some of this mindset in several articles that focus on being prepared:
